Car Hire Tips

Note that in 2009 hire cars were oversubscribed in Menorca, as too few cars were brought over from the mainland by the major operators. So it’s perhaps wise to consider early reservation if you are going to hire on your visit.

• Check minimum age requirement for car hire.


• It is important that you always have available the car contract, your driving licence and your passport (or a copy of it) when driving your hire car.


• Remember, vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road. When walking always face oncoming traffic. The front seat passenger should always be nearest to the pavement/sidewalk (Passenger/Pavement)


• The wearing of a seatbelt by all passengers is compulsory and the traffic police will issue fines on the spot for non-compliance.


• Be careful of radar and photographic speed check areas.


• Overloading your car is also considered to be a serious offence by the police and could cost you a heavy fine.


• Children under 12 years are forbidden to sit in the front of the car unless in a child/booster seat.


• CEDA EL PASO means GIVEWAY.


• Remember the rule in Menorca is always give way to traffic entering from the right.


• Ensure that you take good notice of the traffic signs – never cut straight across, or cross a solid line and you should stop before filtering into traffic.


• Police randomly breath test so Do not drink and drive.


• Speed limit signs are regularly posted. Please do not exceed these, especially through villages and towns. Out of town maximum speed is 90kph on the main roads.


• REMEMBER if you do have an accident, take the name, address, car registration, insurance details, make of car - of the driver involved. Advise the car hire company and co-operate with the police.

When searching always look for “Playas de Fornells” (or “Platges de Fornells” if shown as an option) and make sure you are always looking in “Menorca”. There are other locations nearby like Mercadal, Fornells (the town) and Ses Salinas.

Remember that if you can share with a number of friends or family members what might look like an expensive option, when divided amongst those paying might prove to be a good deal. This is because most accommodation is based upon the room not the number of people staying in the room, although of course you need to ensure that you have sufficient space for a comfortable stay.

Note that later in the week following the wedding, accommodation prices begin to climb as we enter the peak holiday period.

Fornells is the town close to Playas de Fornells. It is still a working fishing village, albeit a picturesque one. There are some hotels and although a very charming location with lots of restaurants (the King of Spain often sails there to eat), there is no beach to speak of:
