Wedding Movie Themes
published March 6th, 2014
Weddings have spawned a plethora of movies, such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Father of the Bride, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sweet Home Alabama. So it seems only fair that weddings should also draw inspiration from the movies. Maybe an exceedingly geeky Star Wars wedding, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Casablanca or Pride & Prejudice. Well, at last two of these are technically a movie based on a novel. The others are simply novel ideas. At least one of which that will have you staring at your wedding photos for fifty years and weep “What was I thinking?”
Yes, you should always think these things through. It may seem like a good idea to walk down the yellow brick aisle dressed as Dorothy and the Scarecrow, but it’ll all end in tears the moment Toto dives into the the wedding cake. The groom would have to dress as the Scarecrow as the lion wouldn’t have the courage and the tin man wouldn’t have the heart. While the Wizard marrying Dorothy would just be creepy.
Sometimes less is more, and subtlety is never a bad thing, especially when it comes to weddings. So what makes a great movie themed wedding idea? Here’s a few that you may like. If we’re being pedantic then some of these are movies based on books (like that famous Jane Austin novel) but we won’t split hairs
The Hunger Games
If you’ve read all the books you may be imagining what Katniss’ wedding dress may have looked like. Well now you can use your imagination and create a gorgeous braided bridal hairstyle, a woodland theme cake, and of course plenty of bread during the reception.
How about a wedding that features owls, wands, and Gryffindor colors as part of your decor. You could even name your tables after the houses in Hogwarts and sit all the people you dislike at the Syltherin table! Although if they’re seated at that table they may realise you hate them and things could get a little awkward.
Woodland theme during the ceremony with cascading floral altar under the Wisteria trees. You can relive Edward and Bella’s wedding all over again.
The Wizard of Oz
There’s actually a theme park called The Land of Oz that’s open for private parties - and weddings. Don’t dress as Dorothy and leave Toto at home, but those ruby red slippers are a must!
Any Disney Movie
There’s plenty of Disney movies that you can draw inspiration from for your wedding - The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, 101 Dalmatians… but maybe Tangled is a via option. Besides, walking down the aisle dressed as a mermaid may have complications…
One couple had the great idea of using this replica mailbox, which is perfect for the cards from your guests. We’re not sure what Mickey and Minnie Mouse were doing there, but if you’re going to have a Pixar themed wedding you need to invite your Disney friends.
Alice in Wonderland
The Mad Hatters tea party, the Queen's Croquet Ground… you could really go to town on this one. Just don’t be late!
